There are a great many options from which you can choose when it comes to website design and construction. Some of us have web skills and others don’t - we are concentrating here on those who have never been involved in any web building or what it entails.

Deciding on the format -

The first decision you need to make is what type of website you are wanting to create -

• what sort of look do you want?
• what energy are you wishing to convey through the medium of your website?

Your website is the means by which you project yourself to the world. It is through this part of your business that you are able to let the world know what you are all about. Consequently, it is an extremely important aspect of your business -

• it is your shop-front!

Now, with the understanding that your website is your shop-front, the image and design of your site is the first stage in this creation. As with ‘bricks and mortar’ stores, prospective clients will either come in and browse, or else just keep walking by without taking a look at what you are offering. In other words, the energy that you create via the colours, layout and design features will either attract or repel your clientele

• It is an extremely vital aspect of your business and it is important to spend time in creating the correct image that you want to portray.

We have been operating our own businesses online since 2000 and during that time we have had the opportunity to experience a great many variations on what can be done with a site. There are certain things that need to be carefully considered when one embarks upon their design -

• Logo
• Design - will it be abstract, pictorial, business-like, artistic, geometric, pretty, bold, etc?
• Colour Scheme - this is closely connected to the actual design, but a design can convey a totally different energy to the public simply by altering the colour scheme.
• Format - will your site be one long page of information, or will you break it into several pages? Will you use tables, columns, fixed backgrounds or perhaps other styles?
• Java - are you going to include java into your design …. will your header be a moving design, or will your buttons, menu bars, etc be java scripted?
• Media - will you include audio or video?

There are so many different design features that it is wise to spend some time cruising the internet to decide just what visual effects you seek. If you come across a site that has design features that appeal to you, bookmark the site so that you can compile a selection of sites to which you can return and from which to draw ideas when it comes time to map out your own website design.

• This is an aspect on which you need to ponder carefully, because it is the look and feel of your site - the energy that it gives to the viewers - that will ascertain who visits and who stays to look at your content ... and even more importantly, who actually goes ahead and contacts you, having gained enough confidence with what you portrayed to give them comfort in who you are as a person. You are therefore, in their minds, a person who can be trusted.

This decision on the format and look of your site is one of the most important ones you will make in the exercise of building your site. Don't even attempt to move any further until you have quite a clear image of what you are intending to do with your site firmly fixed in your mind!

Plug-ins or Widgets can be accessed through your Site Dashboard and also via the insert menu on the actual page, just like the standard objects.  Some are simply components with few parameters, whilst others are almost complete applications by themselves.  Plug-ins or Widgets extend and expand the functionality of your website. Once a Plug-in is installed, you may activate it or deactivate it via your Site Dashboard.

Plug-ins are not officially supported - they are made available as an extra service and the software is provided 'AS IS'.

Widgets can be easily added and inserted into your pages.  Forms are made by just configuring a few buttons - the forms can be as simple or as complex as you prefer.  You can arrange your pages in hierarchies, for example you could have an 'About' page that has 'Life Story' and 'My Achievements' pages under it. There are no limits to how deeply nested you can make pages.
